How to eat a healthy and cheap breakfast

Healthy Breakfast

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. If you miss your breakfast, there is a higher chance you will overeat during the rest of the day. You will eat a larger lunch and you will get hungry around 9 pm.

What to include in a breakfast

Experts say you should include at least one fruit and an item with protein. There are many combinations you can choose from. I try to mix it up during the day.

Monday-Sunday

Out of the items listed below, I mix and match and start the day right with a delicious breakfast. I usually include eggs 3-4 days out of the week. 90 % of the time, my fruit of choice is banana but I do try to get apples, kiwis, pears in there.

Eggs, glass of milk, apple/banana, pancakes, toast, French toast, muffin, orange juice, bagel

Cheap Breakfast

Here is a breakdown of the food products used in my breakfast:

Eggs - $2.99 for dozen = $2.99 / 12 = $0.25/egg

Milk - $3.69 for 1 gallon (3.78 L) = 1 glass =0.25 L = 15 servings = 1 serving = $0.25

Apples - $3.74 for 12 = 1 apple = $0.32

Bananas - $1.18 for 6 = 1 banana = $0.20

Pancakes - $4.00 for 20 servings = 1 servings = $0.20 ($4.00/20)

Toast - $1.50 for 8 servings (2 pieces of toast = 1 serving) = 1 serving = $0.19

Muffin - $0.49 each

Orange Juice - $3.99 for 2 L = 1 glass = 0.25 L = 8 servings = 1 serving = $0.50

Bagel - $0.49 each

If you ate everything I listed above, your breakfast would cost you ONLY $2.89! However, realistically, I eat about 3 items. Therefore, my cost is between $1 and $2. The key is to break everything down and you can see the result of buying from a supermarket and the savings you accumulate.

For the sake of simplification, let’s say you ate out 5 days for a month. The average breakfast costs you $7. In a month, you would spend $140 ($7 x 20 days (5 days/week x 4 weeks)). If you ate your breakfast at home, it would only cost you only $40 ($2 X 20 days).

How much do you spend on breakfast everyday?

For me it depends on my training schedule. If I plan on hitting the gym in the morning then my breakfast will consist of some serious carbs. If I am going straight to school then I usually just make some eggs and have some blueberries and chocolate milk with it. Breakfast is the best meal to eat at home and the cheapest!

@Studenomics Great point. It depends on what you plan to do that day. If you are going to work out, make sure you eat an even bigger breakfast.

@Big truck trader If you stay away from junk food, you are on the right path. Junk food can do some major damage if consumed on a daily basis.
